Group Linux Administrator

Summary of role:

The role is a hands-on Linux role – managing and supporting the Linux systems across the Autovista Group. The role requires someone who is enthusiastic, has expert knowledge of Linux and ideally other Unix technologies and who would thrive in a technology focused business. A key part of this role is removing legacy, complexity, identifying operational improvements with an open mind set for automation.


Key responsibilities:


  •  Problem diagnostics and resolution
  • Knowledge of scripting (Bash, Ansible)
  • Cloud hosted AWS Services
  • Management and optimisation of various Linux Distros (CentOS, Red Hat, SuSE, Debian)
  • Optimise, simplify and consolidate Distro’s into CentOS
  • BAU operational support for incident and request during the working day (Jira, ITIL case management)
  • Manage Load Balancer (nginx)
  •  Manage DNS environment
  • Manage SSL/TLS Certificates


System & Software Installation

  • Patch management
  • New server installations and standardisation (Ansible, Vagrant)
  • Server migrations and cloning (VMWare)


Server Security

  • Server hardening and enforcing role based access



  • Standard build and procedural documentation (ITIL, Confluence, IS0 27001)
  • Document and maintain architecture diagrams and details for infrastructure


Server Performance and Monitoring

  • Resource management and monitoring (Site 24x7, PRTG, VMWare)
  • Capacity plannin


Solution Design

  • Identify and propose improved solutions to existing working practices


Skills, Knowledge & Behaviours Required:

A can-do attitude is required to be able to look at the current environment and plan how to move it forward, bringing in appropriate technologies as required – clustering etc. to ensure the supportability and manageability of the environment, ensuring that projects are delivered on-time. Builds personal and group credibility with the Customer / Business Partner by taking initiative and providing excellent service, resolving incidents within the appropriate timescales. Builds trust and effective working relationships by solving ongoing concerns. Ensures follow-through on short-term commitments.


Must have

  • A general technology background and a passion for IT and automation
  • Demonstrable previous experience in complex operational environments
  • Experience in Linux Systems Administration, CentOS (preferably 7), other flavours desirable
  • Apache
  • Tomcat
  • Nginx (Load Balancer)
  • OpenLDAP and BIND (DNS)
  • Bash-Scripting
  • Java and PHP
  • MySQL, Maria DB
  • Monitoring
  • DevOps ways of working and operational capability
  • Ansible
  • Vagrant
  • AWS hosted platforms


Nice to have

  • Wintel knowledge (MS Windows Server 2008, 2012, 2016)
  • VMWare ESX 6.x
  • Any networking experience
  • Any foreign language skills  - Spanish, German would be advantageous but not essential
  • ITIL Knowledge – ideally at least to ITIL Foundation level
  • ISO 27001 knowledge
